After earning spirited victories at the Singapore Open Super 500 badminton competition on Thursday, two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu and hot-shot HS Prannoy blasted into yet another quarterfinal. In the women’s singles competition, the third-seeded Sindhu defeated Thuy Linh Nguyen of Vietnam, the 59th-ranked player in the world, 19-21, 21-19, and 21-18 to advance to a matchup with China’s Han Yue.
Sindhu and Prannoy have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Singapore Open
In an hour and nine minutes of play, Prannoy, who is ranked 19th in the world, defeated Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei, who is the third seed and is rated #4 in the world, 14-21, 22-20, 21-18. Kodai Naraoka of Japan will be the next opponent for the 29-year-old Indian, who is attempting to end a five-year title streak.
A day after defeating fellow countryman Kidambi Srikanth without dropping a set, Mithun Manjunath’s winning streak came to an end in a hard-fought loss to Nhat Nguyen of Ireland (10-21, 21-18, 16-21). After defeating Han Yue of China 9-21 13-21, Ashmita Chaliha, who had previously defeated Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand, was also unable to advance in the competition.
Later on in the day, two-time gold medalist Saina Nehwal and the future men’s doubles team of MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila will also be competing.
Sania Nehwal was a former world number one and has won 24 international championships, including ten Superseries crowns. Despite having attained the world no. 2 rating in 2009, she wasn’t able to do so until 2015, becoming her the only Indian woman and second Indian player overall (Prakash Padukone) to accomplish this accomplishment. She has competed three times for India in the Olympics, earning a bronze medal in her second outing at the London 2012 Games.
