A loss that the seven-time Grand Slam champion attributed up to complacency and rustiness in his game Williams’ first singles match since August of last year ended in a loss for her in the first round of the Citi Open in Washington. The score was 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Williams remarked, “I didn’t think I played well a lot of the times.” “I didn’t think I played well a lot of the times.” “I’m just trying to get rid of some of this rust. That is to be anticipated in any case. My only option is to enter another tournament and try to improve my performance.”
Singles match
The last time Williams competed in a singles match in Chicago was on August 23, 2021, when she was defeated by Su-Wei Hseih. This match was a tune-up for the United States Open, which would be played on a hard court.
At Wimbledon, Williams participated in the mixed doubles competition alongside Jamie Murray. It was not typical for the two of them, but in the days leading up to the competition, Williams practiced with her sister and former doubles partner Serena.
Venus remarked, “I believe that it was a genuine delight for the fans to see us hit together.” “I believe that above everything else, it was just really thrilling for the tournament,” the commentator said.”
In other action on the women’s side, top-seeded Jessica Pegula and former number one Simona Halep both made it through to the next round.
Pegula prevailed over her compatriot Hailey Baptiste in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-2. After competing on grass for the previous season, Halep had to acclimate to a different surface before facing the Spaniard Cristina Bucsa. She won the match 6-3, 7-5.
Halep stated that it is always difficult to begin a tournament after having a successful run in Wimbledon. But I’m incredibly thrilled that I won the match since now I get to play another match here.
Andy Murray
Andy Murray, a former world number one, was defeated in the first match of the men’s tournament by Mikael Ymer of Sweden 7-6(8), 4-6, 6-1. At the end of the first set, Murray started experiencing cramping and had trouble recovering from it.
“Clearly, it was a letdown,” Murray stated after the event. “The first set included some tennis that I believed was of a high quality. After that, the two of us were both having some difficulty on a bodily level. The tennis that was being played was not very good.”
After not winning an ATP Tour-level singles match since October 2020, British player Kyle Edmund won his first match at that level with a 6-4, 7-6(8) victory over Japanese qualifier Yosuke Watanuki.
Edmund
Edmund, who was formerly rated number one in the United Kingdom and reached a career-high of fourteenth in the world, was sidelined while he recovered from three knee operations.
During his time in rehabilitation, Edmund envisioned himself competing once again in situations similar to this one.
“There were long stretches of time in which I was just out, wasn’t able to play, and didn’t even pick up a racket…. “There was absolutely no fun to be had in any way,” he remarked. “When you’re out and about, these kinds of matches or events are something that runs through your head.”
