On the first day of the first Test against Australia, Virat Kohli fielded at the slips and missed two chances.
Despite India’s dominance on Day 1 in Nagpur, the fielding could have been better on a few occasions. Surprisingly, Virat Kohli was the focus of two missed opportunities.
First, in the 16th over of the day, the former captain of India gave Australia’s star batter Steve Smith a break.
Smith attempted a drive against a fuller delivery on the first ball of that over and received a thick outside edge. Kohli extended his right hand but could not secure the ball at the first slip.
In the subsequent session, Jadeja was defeated by Peter Handscomb by one point. After hitting the gloves of wicketkeeper KS Bharat, the ball deflected.
Again fielding in slips, Kohli was unable to reach the ball. While providing commentary, Mark Waugh, a former Australia star, noted.
In order to move quickly, your legs need to be much closer together. Smith got 37, while Handscomb got 31 and was out.
“Kohli held a very high position. Should have slowed down a little,” Waugh continued. He ought to have performed slightly better. It was almost as if he hadn’t anticipated it.”
Regarding the match, Indian spinner Ravindra Jadeja picked up five wickets on his international return as India prevailed on Thursday’s first day of the first Test against
Australia. In the final session, Jadeja posted 5-47 runs, and fellow spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took three wickets to bowl out Australia for 177 on a tumbling Nagpur pitch.
India responded by being 77 for 1 at stumps, with skipper Rohit Sharma on 56 and Ashwin at the crease without scoring. Australia is still 100 runs ahead of the hosts.
