Shimron Hetmyer, a star player for the West Indies, excluded from the Twenty20 World Cup due to flight misses. West Indies cricket manager Jimmy Adams said he had “no choice” but to drop star batter Shimron Hetmyer from the team for games against Australia and the T20 World Cup because Hetmyer missed his flight to Australia.
Hetmyer’s flight was supposed to leave last Saturday, but he had to change it because of personal reasons. But he was given a deadline to take a second flight, and when he told the team he wouldn’t make it, they had to exclude him from the Windies squad.
“Whilst we changed Shimron’s flight from Saturday to Monday due to family reasons, it was made clear to him that if there were any further delays and issues with his travel to Australia then we would have no choice but to replace him in the squad,” Adams said.
“We are not prepared to compromise the team’s ability to prepare for this extremely important global event,” he added.
His replacement
The left-handed 25-year-old player has been replaced by Shamarh Brooks, who will fly to Australia “as soon as possible” to join the team. Brooks achieved 241 runs in seven games for the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League. This included an unbeaten 109 in the qualifier final, which helped them win the tournament and get closer to the World Cup.
In August, he played his previous T20I against New Zealand and scored 56 runs without being out.
What officials said
“With flight availability a real challenge, a seat was found for him to leave Guyana today, meaning he would unfortunately miss the 1st T20 International against Australia on Wednesday 5 October at the Metricon Stadium,” West Indies said in a statement.
“This morning, Mr Hetmyer, informed the Director of Cricket that he would not be able to get to the airport in time for his flight this afternoon to New York.” they further added.
On Wednesday, the first T20 match against Australia will be played at Metricon Stadium in Gold Coast.
