Young West Indian bowler Shamar Joseph says his Test debut against Australia in Adelaide on Wednesday is far better than his previous employment as a security guard.
He got two wickets on the day, Steve Smith with his first delivery and Marnus Labuschagne shortly after.
The 24-year-old father of one had not played recognized cricket until two years ago, and he arrived with only five first-class matches under his belt.
Last year, he left his day job as a security guard to focus on cricket.
Now that he has made his maiden foray into international cricket, he is just appreciating the chance.
Joseph told ABC Sport that it sounded far better than working as a security guard.
It is not simple labor. Working twelve-hour days, seven days a week.
I mean, cricket isn’t simple, but it’s what I love and want to do for the rest of my life. I would not do it till I was fifty.
But what would I do for my career? I’d enjoy cricket while it lasts.
His 36-run performance, which featured three fours and a six, propelled his team from 133/9 to 188 in the first innings.
Shamar stated that he was neither worried during batting nor after being battered on
the body by the Australian pacers and he went into the game fearless.
Shamar Joseph – Steve Smith is my favorite batter
Shamar referred to Smith as his favorite batter, saying that getting excellent batters like him and Labuschagne out was the perfect way to begin his career.
Steve Smith is my favorite batsman. It’s wonderful for me to get him out on the first wicket.
I believe that is the finest start to my career, and I want to continue performing well.
Shamar was ecstatic as he rushed almost to sweeper cover after taking his maiden international wicket with a brilliant away-nipping length delivery.
He explained that the celebration was just the joy of the occasion.
He also praised the Adelaide audience for cheering him on when he claimed his first international wicket.
