Shai Hope, the captain of West Indies for the third ODI in Trinidad, thought that India’s 352-run mark was reachable. The right-handed batsman, one of many who failed to reach double figures, continued to bemoan West Indies’ wildly inconsistent results in the competition.
By winning by six wickets in the second game, the Men in Maroon had actually given themselves a chance to defeat India in a historic ODI series. However, in the third ODI, the hosts collapsed for 151 when chasing a difficult 352, losing the match and the series.
The 29-year-old thought that the West Indies had a bad day after the humiliating defeat and that his team’s recovery from it has always been his main priority. In the post-game presentation, Hope stated:
- On that wicket, 350 was a reachable total, but today wasn’t our day. Always have the mindset of a winner when playing. I keep emphasising the same thing: maintaining a positive mindset. The objective is to gather the lads and turn some of these losses into victories. On certain days, we wake up and perform like the best team in the world, while on other days, we simply lose.
India was inserted by the West Indies after winning the toss, and the visitors displayed impressive batting skills. Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, and Hardik Pandya also reached half-centuries. Shubman Gill led the way with an 85.
“I thought we contained them sufficiently,” said Shai Hope
The Barbadian believed that although the West Indies did not initially challenge India properly, they did so in the latter stages of the match. Hope tacked on
As I frequently say, hindsight is the best vision. We observed the state of the wicket at the back end, and I believed we had adequately restrained them. We can modify a lot of things by looking back, but things are what they are. We didn’t present them with a ball challenge right away.
Mukesh Kumar and Shardul Thakur shone with the ball, sharing seven wickets between them, while Shubhman Gill was named Player of the Match. Jaydev Unadkat only managed to take down one head, while Kuldeep Yadav also managed to take two.
