Sergio Perez: Witnessed “epic” final laps at British Grand Prix. Sergio Perez said in his speech that the “epic” final laps of the British Grand Prix took him to a flashback. It was in the period when he was in his junior formula career when the Mexican moved his way up to P2 after a critical scrap with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc –been at the last, at 1 point.
Exposure with Leclerc when the race restart – It came after a crash (Turn 1) at the initial start had emphasized the red flags. It forced Perez to look for a new front wing and dropped him to P17, and last, it forced him to put the mammoth stint of 35-lap running on medium tires.
But that time Mexican racer got his desserts when Lap 39 Safety Car gave him the chance to pit for the fresh softs. Right after this, he gets into a captivating competition with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Perez ended up second and first being Carlos Sainz, the maiden winner.
Perez said, “It was getting difficult towards the end of the stint, keeping that pace, trying to open a bit of a window to… Fernando [Alonso] and Lando [Norris], trying to get the window on them, and then when the Safety Car came out, it meant we were in P4, so it was a good chance. Then it was an epic final lap. Those laps reminded me of the junior series, where we’re all racing and having a lot of fun.
“Those final laps were a great fight with Lewis – it has been so long since we had a good fight so it was great to have him back also with Charles, he was very aggressive but fair and I’m sure the fans enjoyed it.”
“At some point, it was looking like a P4, P5, and then we got in the mix for the podium, and we just went for it.”
Perez agreed that after overcoming Leclerc and Hamilton, the winner Sainz was way far for him and it was difficult to catch.
