Swashbuckling Indian tennis player Sania Mirza’s appearance at Wimbledon ended in a semi-final defeat to defending champions Neal Skupski and Desirae Krawczyk in the mixed doubles event. Mirza and her Croatian partner Mate Pavic, seeded sixth, went down 6-4 5-7 4-6 to Skupski of Great Britain and American Krawczyk in two hours 16 minutes on Wednesday night.
Mirza, 35, has won six Grand Slam titles, including three in mixed doubles. She wanted a mixed doubles Career Slam.
Mirza and Pavic’s initial domination
Multiple Grand Slam winners Mirza and Pavic dominated the first set with strong serves. The duo led 4-2 in the second set, but Skupski and Krawczyk won five of the next six games to force a third set. Mirza and Pavic broke their opponent’s serve in the decider but were broken back. Pavic double-faulted twice in the 12th game, and Skupski and Krawczyk won.
Sania Mirza bows out of Wimbledon
The 35-year-old six-time Grand Slam winner has now bid farewell to Wimbledon having won a women’s doubles title in 2015, pairing Martina Hingis.
Sania Mirza’s best All England mixed doubles performance. In 2011, 2013, and 2015, she reached the quarterfinals.
She had previously reached the quarterfinals in 2011, 2013 and 2015. She won the 2009 Australian Open, 2012 French Open, and 2014 US Open with Mahesh Bhupathi.
