According to several reports in local media, a Nepal court has sentenced cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane to eight years in jail for a rape case in which he was convicted in December 2023.
After a hearing today, a panel led by Shishir Raj Dhakal delivered the decision. As well as compensation and penalties, according to court spokesman Ramu Sharma.
Lamichhane, 23, was once the poster boy for Nepal’s cricket revival. And the leg spinner’s on-field success had raised the sport’s image in the Himalayan country.
Sandeep Lamichhane, a former Nepal cricket captain, was found guilty of rape on Friday. After a trial that had been repeatedly postponed, allowing him to continue his sporting career.
Lamichhane, 23, was once the face of Nepal’s cricket rebirth, and his on-field success helped to improve the sport’s image in the Himalayan country.
Last year, he was accused of raping a 17-year-old girl at a Kathmandu hotel. But he was given bail in January and returned to the squad to compete in international competition.
Saroj Ghimire, Lamichhane’s lawyer, told AFP that a court sentenced him on Friday. “His sentence will be decided at the next hearing,” the judge explained.
Ramu Sharma, the district court administrator, confirmed the ruling to AFP.
When authorities issued an arrest warrant, Lamichhane first refused to return from Jamaica, where he was competing in the Caribbean Premier League.
He was sacked as national captain and imprisoned last year, but Nepal lifted his playing ban after he was given bail.
