Sandeep Lamichhane, the former captain of Nepal’s national cricket team, was found guilty of raping a juvenile by a court on Friday. He was found guilty of raping a 17-year-old girl following a lengthy and frequently delayed trial that had allowed him to continue his athletic career.
Sandeep Lamichhane Rape Case
A Nepalese court released Lamichhane in January after he was imprisoned after a 17-year-old girl claimed him of raping her in a hotel room in Kathmandu in August.
On Friday, the Kathmandu District Court determined Lamichhane guilty of rape. The next hearing will determine the senior member of the national team’s prison sentence. Lamichhne has been released on bail.
Following a custody hearing, the Kathmandu District Court issued an order transferring Lamichhane to the Sundhara-based central jail on November 4, 2022. Lamichhane has asked the Supreme Court to reverse the decision.
The Kathmandu District Attorney’s Office filed a complaint against Lamichhane on August 21, accusing him of raping the girl.
The child filed a case against the cricketer at the Gaushala Metropolitan Police Circle on September 6.
He was detained by Nepal Police at Tribhuvan International Airport on October 6 on his way back from Trinidad and Tobago, where he played in the Caribbean Premier League.
In the chargesheet, the district attorney sought compensation from Lamichhane for the victim’s alleged physical and emotional agony. Lamichhane’s bank account and property were both frozen.
Lamichhane’s most recent international appearance came in an August T20I against Kenya.
