The Kathmandu District Court has convicted former Nepal captain Sandeep Lamichhane of rape. At the next hearing, the court will decide on the leg-spinner’s sentence.
Lamichhane is one of Asia’s best spinners. He is the only Nepalese player to have participated in the IPL.
In addition to the IPL, the leg-spinner has played in the Big Bash League, Caribbean Premier League, T10 League, Global T20 Canada, and Men’s Hundred. The 23-year-old appeared to have a promising future, but his career was wrecked by a rape conviction.
The Kathmandu District Attorney’s Office filed a lawsuit against him, accusing him of raping a 17-year-old girl on August 21, 2017.
On September 6, the girl filed a complaint against him. Lamichhane was detained as a result.
Lamichhane was released on bail earlier this year, but his conviction was upheld today by a single-judge court led by Shishir Raj Dhakal.
The court, significantly, decided that the girl was not a juvenile at the time of the rape, and the next hearing will determine the cricketer’s jail term.

Sandeep Lamichhane is now the captain of the PARSA squad in the Nepal Pro Club Championship
The Nepal Pro Club Championship event is now ongoing, with Sandeep Lamichhane leading the PARSA squad. PARSA, captained by Lamichhane, advanced to the championship final by defeating NAC in the semifinals earlier today.
The final is set to take place tomorrow afternoon, with PARSA taking against Nepal Police Club. The match will start at 1 PM IST at Birgunj.
Lamichhane was signed as a Platinum Pick by PSL side Lahore Qalandars for the 2024 season. It currently appears improbable that the spinner will play for the Qalandars in the PSL 2024 competition.
