After a “violent fight,” Samuel Eto’o, a former striker for Cameroon and current president of the nation’s football organisation, apologised “with a supporter after a Monday World Cup game.
Samuel Eto’o Expresses Repentance for “Violent Altercation” But Criticizes Algeria for “Provocation”
A video purportedly showing Eto’o fighting with a man holding a camera outside Doha’s Stadium 974 was shared early on Tuesday morning on the Twitter account of La Opinion, a Spanish-language daily with headquarters in Los Angeles.
According to the report that went along with the incident, the 41-year-old four-time African Player of the Year attacked the man when he was on the ground in the scuffle after reacting furiously to being approached by him.
“I had a violent incident with a person who was possibly an Algerian supporter after the Brazil-South Korea game, “In a tweet, Eto’o made a statement.
In the final two-leg African qualifier for Qatar in March, Cameroon defeated Algeria on away goals. The nation then advanced to the World Cup in thrilling fashion after scoring the game’s winning goal in extra time.
“Since the 29 March match between Algeria and Cameroon in Blida, I have been the target of insults and claims of cheating without any supporting documentation “Eto’o continued.
Cameroonian fans have experienced harassment and teasing from Algerians during this World Cup over the same issue. It’s important to note that although Algeria’s defeat was cruel, it was also entirely consistent with our sport’s morals and regulations.”
Eto’o observed that the Algerian Football Federation had been unsuccessful in all of its appeals against the qualifier’s outcome.
The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy in Qatar, which oversaw the World Cup, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
2019 saw the appointment of Eto’o as a “global ambassador” for the Supreme Committee. Eto’o had a long career at the top of the game, spending significant time at Barcelona and Inter Milan.
Despite defeating Brazil 1-0 in their final game, Cameroon was eliminated from the World Cup in the group stage.
