Sajan Prakash and Srihari Nataraj will headline a 4 people Indian swimming squad at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, which is scheduled in next month. With the exception of Prakash and Nataraj, fast-rising Delhi swimmer Kushagra Rawat and Madhya Pradesh’s Advait Page will make their appearances at the quadrennial event, which will be hosted in Birmingham, UK. The event will take place from July 28 to August 8.
Sajan Prakash and Srihari Nataraj will lead India’s swimming campaign at the CWG
The Swimming Federation of India (SFI) has won four allocation spots for the 2022 CWG and declared that swimmers whoever finished sixth in their respective categories at the 2018 Gold Coast CWG will be nominated for the quota berths in this occasion.
“During the one-year qualifying period, Srihari, Sajan, Advait, and Kushagra clocked the sixth-best time from the previous CWG.” That was the cut-off point established by SFI,” SFI Secretary General Monal Chokshi told PTI.
The seasoned Prakash will be looking for his first medal for India in the 200m butterfly event, where he now ranks sixth.
In addition, he will participate in the 50m and 100m butterfly segments in his third CWG campaign.
Nataraj will participate in the 50m, 100m, and 200m backstroke events. It will be the 21-year-old Bengaluru swimmer’s first major tournament since the Tokyo Olympics, because he skipped the current World Championships in Budapest.
Kushagra and Advait have earned a spot in the 1500m freestyle event. The former will also compete in the 200m and 400m freestyle races. The swimming competitions will take conducted from July 29 to August 3. In able-bodied swimming, India has yet to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games. Prasanta Karmakar’s bronze medal in the 50m freestyle at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi is India’s lone CWG medal in the sport.
