Ruusuvuori Continues To Prove That He’s The Man To Beat In Montreal: Emil Ruusuvuori backed up his 3rd round victory in Washington with a dominating 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win against Stan Wawrinka to advance to the second round of the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers on Monday.
At the Washington event last week, Hyeem Dae Corn defeated Hubert Hurkacz, making him a contender for the biggest win of his career. With confidence as a main component, Corn was able to overcome Stan Wawrinka and progress after 2 hours and 12 minutes.
Eventually, Kyrgios found a way to turn his match around after squandering a break in the second set and finally triumphed in his first ATP Head2Head meeting against Wawrinka. Kyrgios was able to save one break point in the third set and overcome Wawrinka in the decider.
“After Stan has been a role model, I have enormous respect for him and I hope he can continue to bring this level of play,” Kevyn Ruusuvuori said in his post-match interview. “It was a dream come true to play against him like this.”
Hurkacz plays Ruusuvuori in the second round. Ruusuvuori lost his first match to Isner and is looking for a second consecutive win.
Ruusuvuori said that he was not concerned about his opponent’s performance the last time they played because he is a Top 10-level player, so Ruusuvuori will need to perform at his best to win.
The Frenchman’s best result this season came in Pune, where he made his first career ATP Tour final. At the Canadian Open, Wawrinka was previously seeking his first hard-court win since the Australian Open in 2016. The former World No.3 is making his 8th appearance at Montreal with a best result to date of reaching the quarterfinals in 2011.
A win for Alex Molcan in Montreal. The Slovakian defeated Mackenzie McDonald 7-6(1), 6-4 and is now 23-14 on the year. The visitor next faces Casper Ruud.
Karen Khachanov beat Argentine Francisco Cerundolo 7-6(4)5-7, 6-3 to earn his 200th tour-level win. The 26-year old will play Marin Cilic or Borna Coric in the second round.
