On Thursday, January 11, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma downplayed his emotional response after getting run out for a duck due to a mix-up with Shubman Gill in the first T20I against Afghanistan in Mohali.
He explained that such things happen and that his outburst was a result of frustration because he wanted to be out there scoring runs.
The T20I against Afghanistan in Mohali marked Rohit’s return to international cricket.
He last played a T20I for India in November 2022, at the World Cup in Australia.
On the other hand, Rohit’s time at the crease was brief. He was out on the second ball in India’s 159-run chase.
The Indian skipper pushed a Fazalhaq Farooqi ball to the right of mid-off for a single.
Gill, on the other hand, was focused on the ball and did not reply.
Rohit kept sprinting and eventually ran out. He was enraged at Gill and gave the batter a piece of his mind before storming away.
When asked about the event after the game, he stated, “These things happen (on the run-out).”
When this happens, you become irritated because you want to be out there scoring runs for the team. Everything will not go as planned.
The fact that we won the game is more crucial. I wanted Gill to continue, but he was out after a very decent little innings.
Gill opened up after Rohit was out early and smashed five boundaries.
He was, however, stumped off Mujeeb Ur Rahman as he sprinted down the track and utterly missed the ball for 23 off 12.
Team India’s chase was led by Shivam Dube’s undefeated 60 off 40 deliveries, with Jitesh Sharma (31 off 20) and Tilak Varma (26 off 22) also contributing.
In 17.3 overs, the hosts outscored Afghanistan.

We want to keep experimenting – Rohit Sharma
Following the victory, Rohit noted that India want to test different bowlers in various scenarios to see how they react.
However, he emphasized that winning matches is still their ultimate objective.
We want to keep trying new things, including bowling our bowlers in different game scenarios, like you witnessed tonight when Washi Washington Sundar bowled the 19th over.
We want to push ourselves in places where we are a little uneasy, and the bowlers aren’t used to it, added Rohit.
That is something we would want to attempt. Keeping all of that in mind, we’ll do anything we can, but not at the expense of the game.
We want to make sure that we win and that we play well.
The Indian captain said, “Today was a good day for us.”
The second Twenty20 International of the India vs. Afghanistan series will be played on Sunday, January 14 at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore.
