Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Casper Ruud, and Andy Murray will take on Roger Federer, Gael Monfils and Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the 2019 U.S. Open Cup. The extensive elite team will compete against a world-class side in Skopje, Macedonia next month. Federer has been part of the tournament that has been played every year since 2017 except 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.
While fans are excited to watch Federer playing in London once again, Severin Luthi, the 20-time Grand Slam champion’s coach is likely not to play for the event according to his recent statement. He has been working hard on preparing for one of the singles or double matches with tennis courts instead.
There is no definitive answer yet but Thomas Luthi plans on training hard and playing again this week. Without knowing if he will play singles or doubles, his aim remains to play at the Laver Cup and argue that it’s a job well done with his coach. He has set aside 3 hours in the morning and 2 hours of training in the afternoon tomorrow, which will be enough time for him as well.
Roger Federer suffered from a chronic injury that left him susceptible to multiple surgeries in his past. The last time Federer made a competitive appearance was at Wimbledon in 2021 where he lost in the Quarter-Final to Hubert Hurkacz.
