On Sunday, March 5, Liverpool defeated Manchester United 7-0 at Anfield, and Roberto Firmino scored the team’s final goal. At the end of the season, the Brazilian attacker is going to leave Anfield.
Firmino has excelled for the Reds throughout his career. He has played 354 games for the Reds, scoring 108 goals and 79 assists since joining Anfield in 2015.
After the victory over the Red Devils, Jurgen Klopp discussed Firmino’s departure. Klopp stated,
“For him, making the decision was difficult. We were all hoping to see his goal today. Outstanding.”
Against Manchester United, Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez, and Mohamed Salah all scored twice, with Firmino getting the other one. After their victory, Liverpool is in fifth place in the Premier League. After 25 Premier League games this season, they have 42 points on the board.
Jurgen Klopp, manager of Liverpool, is pleased with the team’s “top performance” against Manchester United:
Manchester United was considered to be the favorite to win the match at Anfield. There were very few people who would have anticipated Liverpool to win 7-0.
In response to the victory, Klopp told the media (via Liverpool’s official website):
“Freak outcome, excellent performance. I thought our way of starting the game was really special and the best I’ve seen in a very, very, very, very, very, very We played football while we were there and were aggressive. We were calm at the right times, bouncy, and active at other times, and after 25 minutes, it started to open up a little.”
“United came into the game a little bit better, but the late goal before halftime was amazing: what Robbo is doing there, cutting inside and is then truly quiet – what we were really looking for, that at these times we need to give ourselves an opportunity to get into the right position – and afterward Cody acknowledged it early enough that Robbo needs to pass the ball there and a super completion.”
Added he:
“Last part begins, I don’t figure the last part could begin better with the two objectives we constrained there essentially, and from that second on the young men were flying. Then it was really hard to play against us, and I said, “The result is just the result, the performance is important, and three points is even more important.”
On March 11, Liverpool will face Bournemouth on the road in an away Premier League match. In the meantime, the first leg of the UEFA Europa League round of 16 will take place on March 9 at Old Trafford between Manchester United and Real Betis.
