Rival clubs, Erik ten Hag, Man Utd squad… no one wants him – Carragher slams Cristiano Ronaldo for forcing transfer
Rival clubs, Erik ten Hag, Man Utd squad… JAMIE CARRAGHER has called Cristiano Ronaldo a “wanton” and stated that Erik ten Hag, Manchester United, or any other competing team is not interested in signing him.
The 37-year-old five-time winner of the Ballon d’Or has made public his intention to quit Old Trafford this summer, less than a year after returning to the club from Juventus.
The player’s representative, Jorge Mendes, put him on the market, but Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Atletico Madrid all passed on the opportunity to sign him.
Ronaldo made his return to Manchester United’s first-team squad on Sunday, and he participated in the first half of their match against Rayo Vallecano, which ended in a 1-1 tie.
However, after being substituted off at halftime, the striker was seen leaving the field prior to the end of the game, which Ten Hag deemed to be “inappropriate.”
Carragher presently believes that Ten Hag and the rest of the United squad do not want him anymore, let alone the other clubs.
While discussing The Overlap with Gary Neville, Carragher vented his frustrations by saying, “I always thought [Ronaldo] had a peculiar signature.”
“Even if Ronaldo played fantastic for [United], I always had the feeling that this situation would arise,” he said.
“He signed a contract for two years with an additional year added on, which I couldn’t believe.
“He will never be outdone by anyone, but as a player who has reached a certain point in his career, we are all aware that you are no longer the same guy.”
Because he is such an outstanding professional, his career has continued for a longer period of time.
The fact that he is 37 or 38 years old this season means that he isn’t the same player he used to be. He is still a fantastic goal scorer, but he is not the same player that he used to be.”
Carragher went on to say, “No other club in Europe wants him right now, although I could be wrong.”
However, it appears that United will be able to keep him, and as a result, other clubs are not interested in signing him at this time.
“And if you were to ask Ten Hag, I don’t think he’d want him if I had to guess.
“And I’m not totally sure that the dressing rooms at Manchester United would want Cristiano Ronaldo right now.”
Neville took it a step further and declared that United HAVE TO get rid of Ronaldo because that is their only available alternative.
The former captain of the Red Devils provided the following explanation: “As an ex-United captain, it makes me uneasy to see an ex-United senior player assuming that the star player is playing in the locker room.”
“Over the course of the past few years, there have been a few instances in which Paul Pogba’s agent – and not necessarily Pogba himself – has always played for the club. This has not always been the case.
You can’t have your best player on a team that controls the entire organization. You are not permitted to have him.
“We are aware that [Ronaldo] is not capable of high pressing, and the manner that he wants to play with the ball, I’m not sure if that suits Ten Hag’s way of doing things.
“When that statement came out that Ronaldo wanted to leave, and then on Monday morning I suppose something more came out – I’m not sure the club even knew,” he said. “When that statement came out that Ronaldo wanted to leave, he wanted to leave.”
“The timing at the beginning of the season was bad; it immediately damaged Ten Hag. As a result, Ten Hag had literally every single press conference he conducted wiped out by the Ronaldo controversy.
“When a player becomes the major force and distraction in a manager’s news conference, there is only one thing that has to happen,” said Antonio Conte. “I believe looking back, Pep [Guardiola], [Jurgen] clop, [Antonio] Conte, and Sir Alex Ferguson.”
“Everyone is aware of it.”
