Rick Hoyt Cause of Death, Boston Marathon Wheelchair Racer Dies at 61: At an assisted living home in Leicester, Massachusetts, Rick Hoyt, a devoted Boston Marathon participant who took part in more than a thousand road races while being pushed by his father, passed away on Monday. He was 61.
His family stated in a statement that “complications with his respiratory system” were to blame. At age 80, Hoyt’s father, Dick Hoyt, passed away in March 2021.
Rick Hoyt, a 61-year-old star of the renowned marathon who completed the Boston Marathon 36 times in a wheelchair, has passed away.
Beginning in 1977, Hoyt and his father participated in competitions all around the world, with Dick pushing the chair at more than 1,000 events.
Hoyt was born without the ability to move his arms or legs due to cerebral palsy. He communicated via computer.

In a statement announcing his passing, the Hoyt Foundation stated that he had issues with his respiratory system.
The organization said in a statement that Rick and their father, Dick, “were icons in the worlds of road racing and triathlon for over 40 years and inspired millions of people with disabilities to believe in themselves, set goals, and accomplish extraordinary things.”
In the 1970s, after Hoyt told his father he wanted to take part in a five-mile fundraising run for a lacrosse player who had been paralyzed in an accident, the father and son team entered their first event.
