Reunion with Warriors Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green is ‘very improbable,’ according to trade rumors surrounding Kevin Durant. Even though the Warriors have the money to get Kevin Durant, that doesn’t mean that the Warriors and Kevin Durant will play together again. According to Marcus Thompson of The Athletic, Golden State’s stars would welcome Durant back if there was a reunion. They have even talked to the 12-time All-Star, mostly about how “stunning” it is that a trade is even a possibility. However, Thompson says that they aren’t trying to get the front office to go after Durant and that a reunion is “highly unlikely” even though it’s possible.
On June 30, news came out that Durant had asked the Nets to trade him. After three years with the Warriors, during which he won two championships and two Finals MVP awards, he joined the team in 2019. The Suns and the Heat are said to be two teams that Durant would like to play for.
What he said was:
“The idea of them playing together again had to seem impossible when Durant left in free agency in 2019. It isn’t lost on them how life has contrived an opportunity for them to come full circle. They see it, like everyone else, and talked about it, like everyone else.
This isn’t a case where the Warriors stars are pressing the front office to go acquire Durant. Sources made it clear they are fine defending their title with Wiggins, Poole and the young players they’ve been grooming to win with them. But if the universe somehow sets it up so legends reunite, they’d be open to it.”
Regarding the Warriors’ trade for Kevin Durant
In principle, yes. Not only that, but the Warriors could put together a pretty good deal for Durant without giving up Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, or Draymond Green, who are their best players. If the Warriors wanted to match Durant’s salary of $44.1 million for next season, they would have to include Andrew Wiggins. Then, they could add James Wiseman, Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, Jordan Poole, or draft picks to the deal to make it more appealing. All but one of the Warriors’ future first-round picks are completely in their hands.
One problem for Golden State, if it tried to trade Durant, is that Brooklyn can’t get Wiggins as long as Ben Simmons is still on its team. Why? Because teams can’t have two players on a designated rookie extension at the same time.
