Ravichandran Ashwin became the second Indian and the ninth overall to collect 500 Test wickets
Ashwin, a veteran Indian off-spinner, reached the elusive milestone of 500 Test wickets against England on Day 2 in Rajkot on Friday.
The off-spinner dismissed opener Zak Crawley to reach the milestone with his first wicket of the day.
As a consequence, he became only the second Indian to reach 500 Test wickets after Anil Kumble, who now leads with 619.
The 37-year-old also became the ninth person to reach the milestone, the most recent being his Australian opponent Nathan Lyon.
The event occurred in the 14th over of the innings, Ashwin’s second, when Crawley attempted to sweep but received a top edge, which Rajat Patidar caught in the infield.
Ashwin began the five-Test series with 492 wickets and concluded with four in the first game in Hyderabad, which England won by 28 runs.
The Tamil Nadu-born off-spinner also went wicketless in the first innings of the second Test in Visakhapatnam, with Jasprit Bumrah’s six wickets securing India’s 143-run advantage.
Joe Root, the Tamil Nadu-born cricketer’s 499th Test wicket, fell in the fourth innings in Visakhapatham.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s effort with the bat was crucial in India’s first-innings total
Ashwin stepped out to bat on Day 2 of the current Test at Rajkot’s Niranjan Shah Stadium, as India fell to 331-7.
With the hosts on the verge of falling short of a decent total, he put up a 77-run combination with newcomer Dhruv Jurel.
Rehan Ahmed’s innings came to an end at 37 when he holed out to mid-on after James Anderson made a straightforward catch.
After Jurel was out for 46, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj added another 30 runs to the total.
On Day 1, Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja helped India recover from a 33-3 deficit in the opening hour.
