Retirement
Rahul Sharma has decided to retire from first-class and international cricket in recent development. Rahul, the leg-spinner first grabbed the limelight by dismissing Sachin Tendulkar in an IPL game in 2011. His bowling style has always been praised. With time, he subsequently earned a spot in the Indian team. He played four ODIs for India and took six wickets. Sharma took three wickets from two T20 Internationals. Rahul also faired well in his IPL career. Rahul Sharma took 40 wickets from 44 matches. He announced his retirement releasing an official statement.
The tall leg-spinner first dominated the limelight during IPL 2011. He represented Pune Warriors India in that season of IPL. Rahul’s performance in the tournament helped him earn his maiden India call-up soon for the home series playing against West Indies.
Sharma managed to try his chances in the Test team. But he remained uncapped in that format. Rahul made his One Day International debut under Virender Sehwag’s captaincy. He played against West Indies in 2011 under his captaincy. His T20 International debut came under MS Dhoni’s captaincy against Australia in 2012. The final series of Rahul Sharma with Team India was the Sri Lanka tour later that year.
Speaking to Hindustan Times, Rahul revealed the reason behind his retirement. He talked about how Sachin Tendulkar came to his aid by offering him to play the Road Safety Series.
“Today the day has come, I, Rahul Sharma hereby announce my retirement from international and first-class cricket,” Rahul Sharma said in a statement.
“It is fortunate & lucky to have shared the dressing room with the likes of Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Virendra Sehwag, and MS Dhoni” he added.
“I had been depressed for years for picking up multiple injuries and crucial junctures of my cricket career. I trained and worked on my rehab at the National Cricket Academy. But chances never came by easily. That is when I lost my father and my job. Financial issues were staring at me. That’s when I spoke to Sachin paaji. He remembered how badly I wanted to play competitive cricket again. So, he offered me to play for India XI in the Road Safety World Series. That is when I decided to retire and start my second innings with this league,” he has told HT.
Rahul aims to play in other foreign leagues along with IPL. In IPL, he had represented Pune Warriors, Delhi Capitals, Deccan Chargers, and Chennai Super Kings in the past. He was last seen in a competitive fixture in 2014. The bowler made his comeback in inter-district tournaments. But he was not able to play for Punjab after 2014.
Rahul took five wickets in his final appearance for India A in 2013. But to everyone’s surprise, he was not considered for selection again.
The 35-year-old is set to appear in the Road Safety Series. It is scheduled to take place in September-October, 2022. Former cricketers from many other countries will have the opportunity to be in action in the third edition of the tournament.
