Rafael Nadal’s Champion Reveals His Heartbreaking Health Struggles: Del Potro, the Argentine tennis player reveals how he has suffered with pain and mobility issues for over three years.
Juan Martin del Potro, a tennis legend, retired from the ATP 250 in Buenos Aires in February. The Argentine had a broken kneecap after suffering a knee injury, which required four surgeries from him to return.
Del Potro has revealed that he battles with bad knee-after-effects and needing to undergo surgery for his wrist. His eighth surgery, he has had two surgeries on the wrist and three on the other knee as well.
Del Potro says that he struggles to perform actions as natural as running or driving. I can only walk and also struggle with climbing stairs, I can’t even drive for long without having to stop to stretch my legs because of the pain and it’s very hard, sad when I try to process everything and assimilate what I get. My new challenge is how to process things and live my life everyday as well as possible.
The 2009 US Open champion, who points out that he has been dealing with this issue for three and a half years, has tried numerous treatments and surgeries, with no results. Recently I went to Switzerland to see another doctor who recommended a new treatment given by professional tennis players, but so far I have not had any positive results. It’s a very hard feeling after every attempt, whether it is a treatment or a surgery that Del Potro speaks about.
Davis Cup champion and two Olympic medals have been a difficult blow for the tennis pro to recover from mentally. The frustration he can feel when things don’t go his way is difficult to explain. Davis Cup champion in 2016, but retirement due to physical problems has also taken its toll on Simona Halep’s body.
When I talk to active athletes who no longer play tennis, I hear: Well, I took one or two years of my career, the last year and a half, to prepare for this or that.
