Rafael Nadal prepares for 59th match vs Novak Djokovic at the French Open
Rafael Nadal beat Felix Auger-Aliassime 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the fourth round of the French Open. Now he is line up a record 59th encounter with rival Novak Djokovic.
Sunday’s five-set epic at Court Philippe Chatrier was still the third five-set match Nadal has ever faced at Roland Garros, where he has captured 13 of his record 21 Grand Slam championships.
Nadal is 3-0 in extended matches, including of his 109-3 record in the clay-court championship.
All of his three career losses in Paris opposed Djokovic, the winner of 20 major trophies, including two at the French Open. Djokovic won the title this year after defeating Nadal in the semifinals.
Djokovic wins the overall series 30-28. Neither any two men has faced others as numerous matches in the professional era of tennis.
Meanwhile, reigning champion Novak Djokovic won his 16th Roland Garros semifinal.
Djokovic quickly recovered from a minor hiccup at the opening of the opening pair on Sunday, winning 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 over Argentina’s 15th-seeded Diego at Court Suzanne Lenglen.
Djokovic has captured all 12 sets he’s faced throughout this year’s competition, dropping only 30 sets in four matchups.
He trailed 3-0 in the second set but won seven consecutive games to win that set and take a 1-0 lead in the third.
Djokovic has reached the Paris quarterfinals 13 consecutive years. He won a tournament in 2016 and that was last year, adding to his 20 Grand Slam titles.
