Rafael Nadal could face £8m lawsuit after Roger Federer-type tour plan was abandoned
Rafael Nadal could face £8m lawsuit : After Rafael Nadal withdrew from a South American tour he was scheduled to participate in, the organizers of the tour threatened to sue him for damages, which may result in a bill of eight million pounds.
The 22-time Grand Slam winner was scheduled to compete in an exhibition match in Argentina, which was to be comparable to the one that his greatest adversary Roger Federer participated in in 2019.
Lisandro Borges and Arturo Alacahan, both Argentine businessmen, are the ones spearheading the legal action. The pair had begun discussions with Nadal’s management team over the possibility of the Spaniard competing in an exhibition match in their own country.
The preliminary schedule called for Nadal to compete in matches all around North and South America, with visits planned in Chicago, Mexico, and Ecuador, among other places.
Fourth match
A fourth match was also scheduled to take place, and it was supposed to take place in Argentina; however, it is reported that Nadal’s agent Carlos Costa backed out of the deal. Due to the fact that the tournament in Chicago had been postponed, they made the decision to withdraw from the remainder of the tour and began negotiations with an additional middleman named Marcello Figoli.
Borges has made the assertion that Costa terminated the negotiations because he had been given a more lucrative arrangement and did not believe he would face any significant penalties as a result of his affiliation with Nadal.
Borges has not provided any evidence to support this assertion. Borges asserts that they have sustained considerable financial losses as a result of Nadal’s agent walking away from the negotiations.
“One day, Nicolás Lapentti phones me. He is a former tennis player as well as an event designer, and he had planned a tour to take Nadal to Ecuador, as well as for his brother Giovanni to take him to Mexico. Additionally, there was a date in Chicago, but they required a fourth date because of Nadal.
Would not have participated in the tour if it consisted of fewer than four performances, for which they were to be paid a total of 2.5 million euros per show. According to Sportskeeda, Borges informed an Argentinian television station that for less than ten million dollars, he does not move.”
Carlos costa
“Carlos Costa has a percentage of what he gets for Nadal, and I don’t know what that percentage is, but it will be between 5 and 10 percent. But when Fgoli shows up and hands him 10 million dollars or euros, the guy wins a million, and he doesn’t care in the slightest that he did. He believed that because he was Nadal’s manager, nobody would do anything to him, but he found out the hard way that this was not the case.”
The Argentine was also adamant about emphasizing that he considered legal action to be the last alternative, but due to the huge financial losses he sustained as a result, he had no choice but to pursue it.
“To file a lawsuit against the person who, in my opinion, is the best athlete in the history of the sport. It is not funny to me, but the reality is that when someone causes you as much harm as this, we have no other option but to respond in this manner.”
Express Sport attempted to get a remark from Nadal’s management, but they declined, and Borges has not yet given their response.
Alongside Alexander Zverev, Roger Federer finished a tour that was very much like the one that was initially planned three years ago. In an effort to promote the development of the sport throughout the area, the two competitors participated in a total of five matches that were performed in the countries of Chile, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, and Ecuador.
