It is the brainchild of the late Sri Lankan President Ranasinghe Premadasa, who championed the development of this 35,000-seater concrete bowl, the biggest stadium in Sri Lanka. The stadium hosted its first game on February 2, 1986. The match was between a Sri Lanka ‘B’ side and an England ‘B’ team
The land of the stadium is of monks who lived near the adjacent temple.
The venue is best remembered for holding the world record for the highest Test total – 952/6 declared by Sri Lanka against India in 1997/1998. Former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya scored 340 and Roshan Mahanama 225 in this game. The pair shared a partnership of 576 for the second wicket, which was then the highest for any wicket in a Test Match.

R Premadasa Pitch Report
The pitch on this ground has helped batters and spin bowlers in the past and fans should thus expect some high-scoring encounters. The pitches are slow in pace and low in bounce with the pitches being flat. The dew factor is a big deciding factor in teams wanting to bat second on this ground.
Being away from the sea, the dew plays a crucial role as the ball gets difficult to hold resulting in match-winning run chases in white-ball format.
