PV Sindhu has performed admirably at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics this year. This is India’s first female Olympic medalist in badminton. After a straight-game victory over world no. 9, she earned bronze for India. China’s He Bing Jiao in the third-place play-off in the women’s singles event at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
Sindhu is an acronym for Pusaria Venkata, which is the full name of PV Sindhu. She is an Indian badminton player that competes at the highest level. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, she became the first Indian badminton player to make it all the way to the finals, and she was also named one of Forbes’ Highest-Paid Female Athletes in 2018.

As of July 5, 1995, Sindhu was born to PV Ramana (father) and P Vijaya (mother), both of Hyderabad (Mother). Volleyball is a family sport in which her parents have competed at the national level. Her father was part of the Asian Games team that won bronze in 1986 in Seoul. In recognition of his contributions to sports, he was awarded the Arjuna Award in the year 2000.
PV Sindhu went to Auxilium High School in Hyderabad and St. Ann’s College for Women in Hyderabad for his secondary and tertiary education, respectively. It was Pullela Gopichand, 2001 All England Open Badminton Champion, who inspired Sindhu to pursue a career in badminton.
A Career in Badminton
When Sindhu was eight years old, she started playing badminton. Badminton was introduced to her by Mehboob Ali at the Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications in Secunderabad, where she was taught the fundamentals of the game. Her daily commute from her home to the badminton courts was a whopping 56 kilometres.
After joining the Gopichand Badminton Academy, PV Sindhu won multiple 10-year-old titles. She won the fifth Servo All India ranking championship in both doubles and singles at the Ambuja Cement All India ranking.
For Sindhu, winning titles at the Pondicherry Sub-juniors in Pondicherry, IOC All India Ranking, Krishna Khaitan All India Tournament, the Sub-Junior Nationals, and the All India Ranking in Pune in the under-13 age group was an incredible achievement. At the 51st National State Games in India, she took home the gold medal in the under-14 age group.
PV Sindhu made her international debut at the age of 14. This year’s Asian Badminton Championships in Colombo, Sri Lanka, saw her take home bronze in the Sub-Junior division. While competing in the Iran Fajr International Badminton Challenge in 2010, Sindhu took home the silver medal. At the BWF World Junior Championships in Mexico in 2010, she made it to the quarterfinals but lost to a Chinese opponent.
Sindhu took first place at the June 2011 Maldives International Challenge and the July 2011 Indonesia International Challenge. She reached the finals of the Dutch Open but was defeated in the last set.
Sindhu has made it to the quarterfinals of Women’s Singles Badminton at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021.
The Personal Life of PV Sindhu
PV Sindhu has been working as an Assistant Sports Manager in the Hyderabad office of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) since July 2013. Deputy Sports Manager of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) in 2016, after earning a silver medal at the Olympics in Rio. She was also named Bridgestone India’s first brand ambassador. Sindhu carried the Indian flag at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

PV Sindhu received the Padma Bhushan, India’s highest civilian honour, in January 2020.
In March 2015, Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, was bestowed upon Sindhu.
The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, the country’s highest sporting honour, was bestowed upon her in August 2016.
During the month of September 2013, PV Sindhu received the Arjuna Award for Sports Excellence.
In 2014, the FICCI honoured her with its Breakthrough Sportsperson of the Year honours.
