PSG Witnesses A Historic 9th Title For 2020
PSG Witnesses A Historic 9th Title For 2020. Paris-Saint Germain has achieved their 9th league win creating history on their 50th anniversary. The title win is historic for many reasons but mainly because the Championship was reduced by almost 10 games due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On March 1, Ligue 1 was suspended and the PSG players including the likes of Thiago Silva, Neymar JR, and Kylian Mbappe were at the top of the table then. Therefore, they became the French Champions yet again without having to compete in the usual remaining 38 games. Having 68 points to their name in 27 games, the Parisian side witnessed a record season with their victory.
PSG vs Marseille
On their 11th matchday, Paris Saint-Germain put forward a thrilling match against Marseille, their well-known rivals. The Le Classique which took place on PSG’s home ground saw the club playing a memorable first half after canoeing almost 4 goals in the first half. Kylian Mbappe scored twice in this game and made history by becoming the first player to score in four consecutive games that were played against Olympique de Marseille.
Angel Di Maria
PSG coach Thomas Tuchel’s most used player was undoubtedly Angel Di Maria in Ligue 1’s 2019-2020 season. Out of the possible 27 games, he played at least 26 games. Making goals is a Di Maria thing and he certainly shines in it.
In 26 matches, Di Maria made 14 successful assists giving him the title of the best passer in Ligue 1 for the second time in his career. Had it not been for the pandemic’s obstruction, he perhaps would have gone to beat his record of 18 assists in a single season which he set in the 2015-2016 season.
27 Games
The season witnessed only 28 games out of which, PSG played 27 games. Due to the growing risk involving the spread of coronavirus, the match against Strasbourg was postponed and had to be rescheduled to 7th March 2020. However, the match could not be played after its postponement because the league was suspended on Friday, March 13, 2020, and it ended definitively on 30 April.
The Goal
Neymar JR, in his season’s first match, scored the goal of the season in Parc des Princes against Strasbourg. He shot the goal in pure Brazilian style as he volleyed it into the net acrobatically.
The Champions
The Ligue Professionnelle de Football voted on 30 April 2020 to officially end the season. The entire PSG team was still seen leading the table even though they had a game in hand. Following this, the club was informed that they had won their 9th title stating that they had made history in a press release marking the end of the season.
Thiago Silva added, “It’s a different title, in unimaginable circumstances, but it will remain a source of great pride. I can only thank God for being champion for the seventh time in eight years of Ligue 1. I dedicate this title to the fans and especially to all the doctors and medical staff who are fighting against COVID-19 in the world. They are our players today, they are the ones fighting to get us back on the pitch and in the stadiums as soon as possible.”
