Post Battle With P3 In Home Grand Prix, Hamilton Says, ‘That Was Formula 1 At Its Best!’. After attaining the third position at Silverstone, Lewis Hamilton was pleased to declare that he was happy to be able to race Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc head-to-head in this new era of Formula 1 hardware. The Briton briefly led his first few laps of the season, but after his pit stop on Lap 33, he was behind both Ferrari drivers Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. However, the Safety Car gave Hamilton, Perez, who was in second place, and Sainz, who ended up winning, a chance to put on soft tires before the final restart. As a result, the rest of the race was an exciting battle between Hamilton, Perez, and Leclerc, who was in fourth place driving a Ferrari.
What Hamilton Said
When asked if he liked the fight, Hamilton said: “I definitely did. That was very reminiscent of the karting days, and I feel like that’s Formula 1 at its best: the fact that we were able to follow and dice like that lap by lap is a testament to the direction I think that we’re now in. I was just grateful that I could be in the battle, because I’ve not been in that fight for a while.”
After leading his first laps of the season in a much-improved Mercedes W13, Hamilton was asked if it felt “strange” to do so in his 10th race.
“It’s not a strange feeling at all. I’ve had plenty of years in my career, not plenty, but I’ve definitely had years in my career that I haven’t had wins for a period of time. The progress we’ve made over the past couple of races has definitely given us hope that there’s more to come, there’s potential in this car, and we have to keep doing our due diligence, keep our heads down, stay focused and not give up.”
Mercedes is 61 points behind Ferrari and third in the championship after Hamilton’s and George Russell’s home race, in which they both had to quit because of a big accident on Lap 1. They will go to Austria next.
