Paralympics: Pine blasts five golds to lose out on world lead in Nove Mesto
Paralympics: Pine blasts five golds to lose out on world lead in Nove Mesto. A splendid performance from Paterson Pine allowed for one gold medal in the individual race. Today’s event in Czech Republic was a bye-week for 2020’s Nove Mesto World Ranking and European Cup para archery events, leaving eight individual race medals to be won in 2021.
There was a tight battle against the defending para world champion as Pine beat Jane Karla Gogel 145-139 in the final match of the day. The Brazilian claimed victory to tie with Pine on top qualifying earlier in the day when she scored 695 points, one ahead of Pine.
Pine is proud of the gold medal she won, saying “this is only my second ever individual gold” internationally. She has been working hard with her coach Andrea Gales to improve her performance and the hard work is paying off.
Going against someone like Jane is always tough. Jane is a great archer and we’ve shot against one another a few times now. It’s always a pleasure to compete with her.
This week, Czech world champion Petr Pine turned down a spot at the World Games to focus on shooting events ahead of the European Championships in August that would qualify her for the European Para Archery Cup finals in September. This is part of a long-term plan for Pine to improve her performance as an individual and it’s clearly paying off.
“Up until recently I’ve been seen as a team member, but now with the confidence I have since winning in Tokyo,” said the 24-year-old. “2022 has been a good year for me,” she added. “I achieved international success at the world Championships by winning an individual bronze and then earning a third medal here in Czech Republic,” Phelps said.
Ted Smith is now working towards the European Champions League in a few weeks, and he is hoping to medal there as well.
This year, Tom will be competing in five main events across England, while he’s also ranked quite high on the national tour. He hopes to qualify for the European para archery finals in September, with both events taking place in Nottingham.
Fellow Paralympic Champion and home favorite, David Drahoninsky, defeated Tamas Gaspar of Hungary — 140-134 — to win the Men’s W1 Singles gold. This was his third gold medal at the event after winning both the Men’s W1 team events and Women’s W1 team events. Asia Pellizzari, of Italy, won the Women’s W1 Singles title with a 133-116 victory over Terez Brandlova of Czech Republic.
Other gold medal winners today saw Tokyo 2020 silver medalist and world number one Vincenza Petrilli see off Japan’s Chika Shigesada 6-0 in the recurve women’s final. The Italian scored another triple and they also won in Nove Mesto.
Hanreuchai Netsiri was unable to play in his final against Shigesada’s teammate, Tomohiro Ueyama, after losing the match via an arbiter’s decision.
Belgium’s Piotr van Montagu won compound men’s gold, while Italy’s Matteo Bonacina and Ruben Vanhollebeke were the winners of visually impaired competitions.
