Hong Kong was simply blown away in the run-chase with the Pakistan players. They attacked proving to be too good for them.
Their innings wrapped up for 38 runs in 10.4 overs and sent Pakistan into the Super 4s. Pakistan is the second-placed team in Group A.
This match registered Pakistan’s biggest win in the shortest format.
Pakistan will face India, who topped Group A, on Sunday.
Hong Kong displayed potential with the bat against India but surrendered to the Pakistani attack.
It was a procession and Naseem Shah struck twice in the third over.
Then the spinners, Shadab Khan (4/8) and Mohammad Nawaz (3/5) did the damage and they shared seven wickets.
Shadab’s googlies proved to be too good for the opposition batters. He ended Hong Kong’s innings by dismissing Mohammad Ghaznafar.
A learning experience for Hong Kong
Hong Kong had a good learning experience. The Hong Kong team was full of amateurs who had to qualify for the tournament.
Hong Kong bowlers did well to keep Pakistan quiet for the majority of the innings, but eventually lost their way.
Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman (53 off 41) struggled to find the boundaries. Pakistan scored 64 runs for one in 10 overs.
Khushdil Shah displayed a 15-ball 35 towards the end and ensure Pakistan put up a strong total.
The captain, Babar Azam (9 off 8), endured his second failure in as many innings in the tournament.
Babar attempted an aerial stroke over the bowlers’ head but ended up hitting straight back to spinner Ehsan Khan. Eshan Khan dived to his right and took a fine catch.
Rizwan found the ropes in the fifth over as he squared cut medium pacer Ayush Shukla. He guided toward the third man for back-to-back fours.
The first six was seen in the 11th over. Rizwan outperformed the leg-spinner Ghazanafar to tonk it straight for a maximum.
Pakistan was in dire need of big hits and Fakhar released some pressure. He smashed the spinners for a couple of sixes in the cow corner region.
Struggling due to the heat and humidity, Rizwan changed gears after completing his half-century.
Lacking experience in difficult situations, Hong Kong bowlers lost the plot in the death overs. They allowed Pakistan to collect 77 runs off the last 30 deliveries.
Aizaz Khan bowled the 20th over. This over yielded 29 runs and it included five byes and four sixes from Khushdil Shah.
