Pakistan Cricket Board Set To Host First Under-19 T20 World Cup
Pakistan Cricket Board Set To Host First Under-19 T20 World Cup: PCB is launching a women’s city-based cricket tournament. The Pakistan board hopes the tournament will create a larger talent pool for women’s cricket in Pakistan, as well as boost publicity for the inaugural U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa next year.
The PCB will have an Under-19 women’s T20 league, six associations compete in a round robin tournament, with Lahore Country Club as the venue. There are 84 players with 15 reserve players on standby during the 10 day round robin tournament.
The PCB is hoping to develop a strong pool of talent in the country for international tournaments, looking particularly ahead to the inaugural U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup next year in South Africa.
Players born on September 1, 2003 and later are eligible to enter the competition. Those performing better than others will be moved up into the national sides for T20 matches and one-day domestic tournaments.
Women’s cricket in Pakistan had been a destination rather than a journey. There has been no approach to coaching and programs at the grassroots level, meaning that there is only a pool of 30-35 competitive female cricketers. Women’s cricket tournaments have only been held twice – with three teams playing in each the National T20 and ODI Challenge Cups.
The Under-19 tournament offers a more concrete pathway to senior cricket, with squads selected after open trials, followed by practice games among the players across the PCB-run regional academies.
PCB was previously involved in two junior cricket U-17 tournaments, one from 2004-2008, and another from 2009-2013. However, a policy change made all youth women’s tournaments disappear in 2013 as official ones were disbanded.
