Packers Walkthrough: Players Return To Practice
Packers Walkthrough: Players Return To Practice, The Green Bay Packers claimed that their conditioning wasn’t up to par at Friday’s first team practice of the season, which was one factor in ending the scrimmage prematurely. The next day, the coach did away with a practice and made it a walkthrough so that the players could recover from draining their tanks on Friday.
LaFleur asserted that players who were not getting many reps in practice will likely have to play later pre-game to make sure they are getting their bodies into football shape, but that the team has transitioned its focus to the upcoming preseason game versus the San Francisco 49ers on Friday. The Packers will have two open practices this week, before leaving for Santa Clara, California.
Notes
After Family Night, they decided to do a walkthrough in the Don Hutson Center. But even if the rain hadn’t have pushed them indoors, the Packers would have practised indoors either way, as that was their intent last week.
Darnell Savage, who was added to the team’s injury list earlier in the day with a hamstring injury, and Innis Gaines replaced both of them. Savage was seen on the sideline with an ice bag taped around his leg at Friday night football game, as neither LaFleur nor Savage made it sound like either player’s injury was serious. Randall Cobb also had a veteran rest day.
The Green Bay Packers had a productive practice today, with three of their injured players returning in the form of running back Patrick Taylor (groin), receiver Malik Taylor (shoulder) and cornerback Keisean Nixon (groin). Nixon was officially removed from the NFI list so he is eligible to play against San Francisco. It will be interesting to see how many backs are active for the game since Aaron Jones has been ruled out for the game, leaving just two undrafted free agent RBs-Patrick Taylor and AJ Dillon.
Randy Ramsey was held out of Family Night to rest his ankle in the preseason. Ramsey was recently taken off of the physically unable to perform list and returned to practice on Sunday.
Packers kicker Mason Crosby was working with rehab group and practice field for the first time, while Christian Watson in all likelihood. Prognosis improved for a possible return on the gridiron. Nixon looked like he was 100 percent during practice this morning.
On-field drills provide very little insight into what the Packers are doing. The biggest development of practice today could be that safety Vernon Scott continued to play ahead of Shawn Davis, according to Packers reporter Mike Spofford, who said the demotion occurred during Savage’s absence. Davis had previously been featured in a third safety dime package but now has fallen out of favor as he lost playing time to Scott over Family Night on Friday.
The cornerback Jaire Alexander has been working out as a nickelback. He played three snaps with Rasul Douglas in the slot when the team was playing San Francisco last year, but this summer, Douglas has only been playing on the outside play in nickel sets. On Family Night, Alexander took no reps at all in the slot and Douglas took no reps at all on the outside with “the ones.”
Aaron Nagler, of CheeseheadTV, said that Jake Hanson, competing for the team’s starting right guard position, saw some snaps at center today with the starting group. Hanson has a background at both positions and could be the next man up for the team if starting center Josh Myers goes down with an injury.
In the only two players to get punt returns, Amari Rodgers and Romeo Doubs were present. Cobb is currently on veteran rest day and did not practice with the group. Cornerback Rico Gafford who has seen reps at both return positions did not work with that group either.
