Djokovic won the championship for the first time since 2015 in front of a raucous audience that was firmly in his camp. He did so with a stylish ace, one of nine in the game, to complete the triumph.
The Serbian remarked in a TV interview following the game, “Got to be concentrated the entire match, every single point, the momentum can turn to the other side extremely rapidly.”
He added, matching Roger Federer’s six titles in the season-ending competition between the top eight players in the world, “The fact that I waited seven years makes this victory even sweeter.”
In 2022, the 23-year-old Ruud has played some of his best tennis of his career. He initially went head-to-head with the 21-time major champion, but made two careless errors at the wrong time that allowed Djokovic to take the break at the end of the first set.
The fans at the Pala Alpitour was reminded by Djokovic why he is among the finest players to ever pick up a racquet when he used his powerful forehand to break Ruud in the fourth game of the second set. From that point on, he accelerated.
In the 36-shot last rally, the Norwegian gave the veteran everything he had, but the Wimbledon winner was simply too quick, outlasting his challenger in the arduous exchange and raising his arms wide in celebration after winning.
