Novak Djokovic advances to men’s record 32nd Grand Slam Final, 2022. Djokovic’s endless Wimbledon Summer continued unabated as the six-time champion defeated the Hope of Great Britain, Cameron Norrie in four sets. He had a shaky start but soon pulled over and accelerated to stage a triumphant victory on the Center Court. He suffered an early scare but soon turned the tables dramatically on Norrie to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 reaching his eighth final at the All England Club.
“Cameron was dominating the play. I got lucky in the second set to break his serve at 4-3 after he missed a couple put aways. From then the momentum shifted a little bit,” Djokovic commented on his comeback.
It is a record for men’s tennis that a player has 32 finals at the majors and this mark has been made by none other than Novak Djokovic.
After defeating Norrie, Djokovic has seven straight Wimbledon semi-final wins and has the fourth-longest men’s single winning streak in the Open Era. He is only behind Bjorn Borg (41), Roger Federer (40), and Pete Sampras (31).
It puts him one ahead of Roger Federer and two clear of Rafael Nadal, who was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to injury.
If he defeats Krygios and wins the title, he would own 21 Grand Slam titles, surpassing Federer and just one behind Nadal in the race to be crowned the greatest of all time.
The World No. 3 is chasing his 21st Grand Slam title as he looks to defeat the 22-time major champion Rafael Nadal. The 35-year-old will face Nick Kyrgios in the championship match after Spaniard Nadal withdrew ahead of his semi-final meeting with Kyrgios due to an abdominal tear.
“Well one thing is for sure: there’s going to be a lot of fireworks emotionally from both of us,” Djokovic said with a laugh on the court.
“We have a bit of a bromance now, which is weird,” said Kyrgios. “I think everyone knows there was no love lost for a while there. I think it was healthy for the sport. Every time we played each other, there was hype around it. It was interesting for the media, the people watching and all that.’
“I felt like I was almost the only kind of player and someone to stand up for him with all that drama at the Australian Open. I feel like that’s where respect is kind of earned. Not on the tennis court, but I feel like when a real-life crisis is happening and someone stands up for you.”
