The 2022 Wimbledon finalist used the Tesla app on Monday to follow and slow down the vehicle as Canberra police pursued it, according to court records.
According to the Australian Telecom Partnership, tennis player Scratch Kyrgios helped police apprehend a man who allegedly took his Tesla from a home in Australia’s capital city on Tuesday at gunpoint.
According to court records, the 2022 Wimbledon finalist used the Tesla app on Monday to track and return to the vehicle while Canberra police were looking for it.
The ABC reported that a man allegedly pointed a gun at Norlaila Kyrgios, Kyrgios’ mother, demanded the keys to the car, and asked her to demonstrate how to drive it, according to court documents. As he entered the vehicle, she took off and shouted for help. Kyrgios, who was in the vicinity, called the police’s emergency number and helped them locate the vehicle.
Shortly after the vehicle entered a school zone, the police pursuit came to an end thanks to the assistance of a police strategic response group in the capture of a man. After appearing in the Australian Capital Area Justices Court on five related charges, including disturbed burglary, driving a stolen vehicle, rage driving, and failing to stop for police, a 32-year-old elderly person was denied bail.
Last year, Kyrgios reached the Wimbledon final and the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open. However, he has not competed in any elite-level competitions since being forced to withdraw from a tournament in Japan in October due to a knee injury.
