New Coach Has Tahoka Football Building Ground Up
New Coach Has Tahoka Football Building Ground Up: In 2019, Tahoka High School won their first-ever district championship and followed that victory up with a win in the first round of the playoffs. Since then, however, the team has been struggling, going winless in districts in back-to-back years. In Cody Bounds’s job interview , he asked what the school wanted its football program to become.
This is just one of the things that Bounds said. And yes, what we need to also do is start fighting for these random little things that seem so obvious for most people; but we’re not initiated into those battles yet. We’re having to fight a few different fights and I think there’s lots of little things that are exciting to us.”
With the reduction in starting players, Bounds is now expecting to have 7 starters on each side of the ball. Due to player transfers and no-shows for football, the team will likely have fewer number of starters.
The majority of the elementary students have met this with effort, prioritizing their schoolwork and setting high expectations. Some students choose not to participate; Bounds stated that he observed this trend recently.
And that’s ok. We love those kids. They’re welcome back if they just change their mind, if they decide they want to work hard. But right now, we’re heading in a direction and we’re setting that foundation for success.”
Bounds said this weekend he respects those who opt not to play but his focus will be was on the seniors, who have returned one last game with the Bulldogs while they’re still active. I’ve told my seniors that we’re going to do everything we can to win as many games as we can and also honor them.
Among the returners for the Bulldogs are Rodriguez, Dylan, and Arrington. These three help to form the most optimistic position in terms of strength on both sides of the football. It is hoped that this will help lead to a long winning streak for the Bulldogs.
As a result, there are no positions that have already been decided. Senior dominic Varela is competing for the starting quarterback position with freshman Brogan Stone. Sophomore Logan Bounds said some players are being moved to new positions this year.
Stone is the prototypical quarterback. Varela’s athleticism will allow him to be used in a variety of positions, regardless of how the QB battle pans out. Tahoka does have a few guns in Casen Resendez, who Bounds is high on for this upcoming season.
Resendez has really shown us things through his work and with the help of a mostly all-freshman team and some sophomores, we’re really excited about what our future holds for this program. The kids in the classroom are working hard because of who is on the field and not just who isn’t.
