Neeraj Chopra, star of the javelin, admits, ‘I know my English isn’t too perfect,’ providing the appropriate REPLY to criticisms of his language skills. Neeraj Chopra, who won the Diamond League on Thursday, says he is doing his best to speak English because his sport requires him to know it. The Indian javelin star, who is 24 years old, says that he has gotten much better at speaking English in the last few years, mostly because he has to speak English with his coach.
“I know my English is not perfect but I try my best. It has improved a lot with talking to my coach. I know that athletics is a global sport and I want to reach everyone. I know that I can’t find a translator everywhere so I try my best,” said Neeraj over a Zoom call.
After his historic Olympic gold, Neeraj Chopra had to deal with business and social obligations that wore him down. However, he plans to do things differently next season because he has “learned” from this season.
Chopra’s Feat
Chopra, who won an Olympic gold medal in javelin throwing, made history again on Thursday. He became the first Indian to win the Diamond League Finals title in Zurich.
Hours after his latest win in the Swiss city, the 24-year-old woke up to find a group of Indian reporters waiting for a virtual interview with the best track and field athletes in the country. One of the questions was about what he planned to do next off-season.
“Last year was a very new experience for me, balancing was difficult, but I learned from last season,” Chopra said.
He promised he wouldn’t do anything he did in the off-season before so he could peak at the right time and stay in shape.
“This time for the few commercial commitments I will give dates in advance. When the training time comes, I will be fully focussed on that … So that the preparation is taken care of well.. I will not rest too much, will start training early, and keep my weight in check by not eating much.”
