Sethi belives his decision to appoint Shan Masood as vice-captain was right but it was the captains and coaches decision on not to include him in the playing XI. Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) management committee, Najam Sethi, has recently disclosed why Shan Masood was appointed as the vice-captain for the previous home series against New Zealand scheduled in January.
In an exclusive interview with ‘Express’, Sethi revealed that he wanted to test Masood’s abilities as the vice-captain and had consulted with some individuals about the decision. “The decision to appoint the captain and his vice-captain is my discretion. I had some things going on in my mind, and I had also consulted some people in this regard. I thought of trying [Shan Masood] as a vice-captain to test his ability,” he said.
However, Shan was not included in the playing eleven of the first match, which was chosen by the selection committee.
“I saw that the selection committee of the series consisting of the captain and the coaches did not include him in the playing eleven of the first match. The team management knew the situation better, so there was no such thing,” said Sethi. Sethi clarified that he did not interfere with the selectors’ decisions but had the right to ask questions to which they had to answer.
“If the selectors are conflicted, they can defend their decisions.
The media rains on them and also asks questions. I said that since there will be cricket questions, I don’t need to sit with you, you guys have selected the players and made the decisions, so answer them yourself,” he said.
The 74-year-old also expressed his satisfaction with the decision to appoint the 33-year-old as vice-captain and maintained that it was the team management’s decision not to include him in the initial matches.
“I think that my decision was also right and after that if Shan was not included in the initial matches
It was the decision of the team management, which was right or not, only the observers can tell,” he concluded. It is worth noting that Shan was named as the vice-captain of the national side when New Zealand previously toured Pakistan for three-match ODI series which they won 2-1.
‘He will remain Captain’, PCB chief Najam Sethi gives Babar Azam captaincy assurance
There have been rumours regarding Babar’s captaincy future as the accomplished batter has struggled of late. Babar was rested for the Afghanistan T20I series, which further heightened the speculation of his future as Pakistan captain. Sethi also said on Monday regarding the captaincy controversy and confirmed he will seek assistance from the selectors and the head coach and take decisions accordingly.
“For months media and cricketing circles have been discussing pros and cons of retaining Babar Azam as captain in all formats of the game. Since this decision is ultimately Chairman’s, I have sought views of Selection Committees headed by Shahid Afridi and now Haroon Rashid,” Sethi tweeted on Monday. “I will also be guided by what the Selectors and Director Cricket Ops and Head Coach have to say going forward. I expect they will be in the best position to advise me. Therefore we should support Babar and not make matter controversial in interests of national team,” Sethi added.
Pakistan will not accept any…’: PCB chief Najam Sethi’s FIRM STANCE on Asia Cup 2023 hosting rights
A lot has been said and written about the Asia Cup 2023. While Pakistan are the originals host for the showpiece event, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had announced last year that Team India won’t travel to their neighbouring country (due to both nations’ strained political relation). Since then, a lot of speculations have been raised with regard to where the continental tournament will be held, which is set to take place in September ahead of this year’s ODI World Cup in India.
Firstly, it was said that the tournament will move to UAE with Pakistan to remain as the hosts. Last year, Sri Lanka remained the host but the competition was held in the UAE. However, multiple reports suggested that a hybrid model will be followed for Asia Cup, with India to play their encounters elsewhere.
Now, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Najam Sethi has shared his firm stance on Asia Cup hosting rights.
