Mohammad Amir’s cheeky tweet takes the internet by storm after Shaheen Afridi gets ruled out of Asia Cup 2022: Ahead of the start of the 2022 edition of the Asia Cup T20 tournament, Pakistan took a huge blow on Saturday (August 20), when their star pacer, Shaheen Shah Afridi, had to be ruled out of the tournament. The 22-year-old, Afridi won the ICC Player of the Year award in 2021. Afridi suffered an injury during the first Test against Sri Lanka in July, which he is still nursing, and to get fully recovered he will be needing at least four to six weeks of rest.
After the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the decision that Afridi would be absent for the next four to six weeks, fans on social media have come up with various reactions. While some see it as a disadvantage for Pakistan’s chances of securing a positive result in the Asia Cup, others say that the competition has now become equal because India’s Jasprit Bumrah is missing the action too.
On Saturday, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the news of the ruling out of Shaheen Afridi from the men’s Asia Cup 2022, which begins on August 27. Afridi had been away from international action since July when he was forced to miss the second Test of the series against Sri Lanka. While Afridi traveled with the Pakistan team to the Netherlands for the side’s three-match ODI series, he did not make his place in the squad. In addition to the Asia Cup, Afridi is also ruled out of the England series.
But amidst all this, one reaction that has caught everyone’s attention is from former Pakistani pacer Mohammed Amir. The 30-year-old left-arm pacer had announced his retirement from international cricket in 2020. The pacer took to Twitter to post a cheeky tweet that has taken the internet by storm.
Amir took retirement from international cricket in late 2020 but made himself available for selection in June last year. However, the PCB did not consider him for a potential return. As Afridi was ruled out due to injury, Amir posted on Twitter, “m trending on Twitter but why.”
Mohammad Amir was Pakistan’s leading pacer in all three formats, but in the recent few years, he fell down the pecking order. He had been ruled out of the sides on numerous occasions. Owing to the differences between him and the then head coach and other senior members of the coaching staff, he announced his retirement in 2020.
The pacer, Mohammad Amir’s, had performed well against India in the past. His opening spell in the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy, in which he knocked out India’s top three – Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, and Virat Kohli – is still fresh in fans’ memories.
The PCB had earlier revealed that Shaheen has been advised four-six weeks of rest by its medical advisory committee and independent specialists following scans.
The board said that while Shaheen has been ruled out of the T20 Asia Cup and the seven-match T20 home series against England, he might return to competitive cricket in October with the New Zealand tri-series. Afridi is expected to be a part of the squad for the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia.
Shaheen had suffered from a right knee ligament injury while fielding during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle in July. He was selected in the Pakistan ODI team and Asia Cup team despite his injury with chief selector, Mohammad Wasim. Mohammad Wasim insisted he would be better off being looked after by the team doctor, physio, and trainer.
