Middlesbrough has named Michael Carrick as its new manager
Following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal as United manager in November of last year, Carrick took over in an interim capacity.
Chris Wilder, who was fired just this month when the team was in the bottom three, is replaced by the former England player, who is 41 years old.
“It’s a really unique feeling to be back here as a head coach,” Carrick said in a statement. “Middlesbrough was the first professional club I played for as a nine-year-old youngster.”
I am very aware of what football represents to people having grown up in the north-east myself. It’s an absolute honour for me to hold this role and experience your level of fervour and enthusiasm for the match and for Boro. I’ll do my all to advance the team, keep the club moving ahead, and uplift the supporters. I am eager to get started.
Middlesbrough has been having trouble in the Championship, and after 16 games, they are one point above the relegation zone and 21st in the rankings. They go to Preston on Saturday.
Throughout his career, Carrick played for more than 700 different clubs, and while playing for United under Alex Ferguson, he won five Premier League championships as well as the Champions League.
