Mel Jones Decides to Step Down From Cricket Australia Board To Concentrate On Her Overseas Work Commitment
Mel Jones Decides to Step Down From Cricket Australia Board To Concentrate On Her Overseas Work Commitment, Former Australia International, Mel Jones, is stepping down as one of the directors of Cricket Australia. The 50-year-old wants to focus on her international commitments and invest time there. This decision won’t allow her to give much of her time to the board.
Jones became a member of the Board of Directors in the year 2019. She belongs to a group of nine directors. Jones is the only one with prior experience in playing international cricket. She will be leaving her office in the month of October. Jones took the decision not to stand for re-election.
Brooding about her reasons for international work commitments, Jones said, “My future work commitments, particularly given that I will be overseas for many months of the year, mean that I will not be able to devote the time required to fully support my fellow board members after this year.”
Jones is popular for her commentary skills in the cricketing world. She has been an integral part of ICC’s commentary panel in any event of theirs. With multiple World Championships knocking on the door and women’s cricket set to begin in full swing, Mel’s responsibilities as media personnel will not allow her to concentrate on other works.
“Jones has decided not to stand for re-election due to her extensive media and other work commitments in Australia and overseas,” Cricket Australia revealed in an official statement.
“It has been an honor to serve for three years on the CA Board but my future work commitments, particularly given that I will be overseas for many months of the year, mean that I will not be able to devote the time required to fully support my fellow Board members after this year,” she said.
“Consequently I will not be standing for re-election and will complete my three-year term at the next AGM. I would like to thank the Chairs and Board members, Cricket Australia staff, and committee members and wish all those involved in Australian Cricket every success as we embark on an exciting new strategy and build on the game’s great foundation for the future,” Jones said.
“I am delighted, of course, to be able to continue my long-standing connection to cricket through my commentary, sporting and business interests, and the broad range of cricket relationships,” she added.
Cricket Australia Chair Lachlan Henderson expressed his gratitude towards Jones for her service and contribution to the Board.
“Mel has been an outstanding member of our Board and her unique perspective and insights have been invaluable as we have set the strategy to ensure the continuing future health of the game,” he said.
“Mel has made an enormous contribution to cricket through her playing days and subsequent involvement in coaching, commentary, and work in the community, and will continue to do so.”
“We look forward to formally recognizing Mel’s contribution to the CA Board at the AGM in October,” he added.
Jones had played 5 Tests and 61 ODIs for Australia in the past. She was an ‘outstanding’ member as per the chairman of Cricket Australia. He thanked her for her ‘invaluable’ service and announced to formally recognize her contribution at the next AGM meeting. The AGM meeting is scheduled for the month of October.
“Her unique perspective and insights have been invaluable as we have set the strategy to ensure the continuing future health of the game. We look forward to formally recognizing Mel’s contribution to the CA board at the AGM in October,” he said to the media.
