In the 16th season of the Indian Premier League, ten teams will compete in a double round-robin home and away format during the league stage. The top four teams will advance to the playoffs, which consist of the Eliminator, two Qualifiers, and the Final.
In contrast to the previous three editions, which were affected by the COVID pandemic, IPL 2023 will return to the original home-and-away format, with each of the ten teams playing their home games at their respective venues. Twelve venues will host a total of 74 matches.
The Eliminator, Qualifier, and Finals will conclude by May 28. The league phase will end on May 21. During the IPL Auction 2023 in December 2022, each of the ten teams finalized their rosters. The majority of teams had also announced their captains for the season, with the exception of Sunrisers Hyderabad, which chose Aiden Markram to lead them.
Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals suffered a setback when superstar captain Rishabh Pant was involved in an accident at the end of December 2022, putting him out of action for good. As a result, DC will also choose a new captain for the upcoming season, with David Warner and Axar Patel likely to take over.
The majority of franchises, like the captains, have announced their coaching and backroom staff for the upcoming cash-rich league. The coaches and teams at Punjab Kings will be led by a new person. In addition, Kolkata Knight Riders hired a new coach after Brendon McCullum joined the England Test team.
After taking over as captain of the Chennai Super Kings midway through the previous season, Mahendra Singh Dhoni begins a new one. After former coach Tom Moody resigned, the Sunrisers promoted Brian Lara to head coach, and Mumbai Indians have also hired Mark Boucher as their head coach.
