According to a report from The Sun, England manager Gareth Southgate will never select suspended Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood again. Greenwood was once thought to be one of the best young talents in England. When Manchester United defeated Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) 3-1 in the UEFA Champions League in 2019, he made his professional debut at the age of 17. Greenwood was United’s second-youngest player ever to compete in Europe for the club.
By the age of 20, Greenwood had made 129 appearances for Manchester United, scoring 35 goals and assisting 21 others across all competitions. However, his personal controversies would halt his career. Mason Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 on charges of attempting to rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behavior, and assault with actual bodily harm to his girlfriend. Both Nike and EA Sports terminated his contracts, and Manchester United suspended him.
However, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges against Greenwood last month. Due to the ongoing investigation by the club, he has not yet played for the Red Devils. After a disagreement with Southgate in September 2020 when he and Phil Foden violated COVID-19 quarantine guidelines, the Englishman wants to restart his international career. The following day, the pair were sent home.
A source told GOAL about Greenwood’s desire to play for the Three Lions, saying:
He is clinging to the idea of returning to the highest level of play. However, Southgate places a high value not only on a player’s talent but also on how well the team works together. Mason Greenwood could also pursue an international career with Jamaica. Through his mother’s side, he is eligible to play for the national team, and if he wants to, he could start playing for them in September.
Dennis Chung, the head of the Jamaican Football Federation, praised the forward. Through The Sun, he stated:
He “has a very bright future ahead of him because he is only 21 and I think he will add value to any team he is on.” So far in his career, Mason Greenwood has only made one appearance for England.
Mason Greenwood’s return is being considered by Manchester United: Reports:
As the club conducts its own internal investigation, Greenwood’s future with the Red Devils is at risk. United issued the following statement last month:
“The option of reintroducing Greenwood to the club’s first-team squad as part of a possible phased return to football remains firmly under consideration,” according to The Athletic. Before deciding on the next steps, the club will now carry out its own procedure. We will not provide any additional information until that procedure is completed.
In addition, it stated that before making any decision, Manchester United would consider the opinions of the women’s team, sponsors, and fans. He would also get counseling and be exposed in an interview on television.
