According to both clubs’ announcements on Sunday, Manchester United and Ajax Amsterdam have reached an agreement for the defender Lisandro Martinez to join the club for an initial cost of 57.37 million euros ($57.87 million), plus 10 million euros in potential add-ons. Martinez, an Ajax defender, will join Manchester United for 67 million euros
The transaction is contingent to passing a medical exam and receiving a visa; fulfilment is anticipated in the next several days.
There was no word on the length of the contract, although a person familiar with the terms told Reuters that Martinez will sign a five-year deal with the Premier League team, with an additional 12-month option.
After bringing in left defender Tyrell Malacia of the Netherlands and midfielder Christian Eriksen of Denmark, the 24-year-old, who can also play in midfield, will be manager Erik ten Hag’s third signing.
Following Martinez’s May 2019 transfer from Argentine club Defensa y Justicia to Ajax, Ten Hag served as the player’s head coach for three seasons. Martinez made 118 appearances for the Dutch club.
As a result of their defensive issues the previous season, United saw a new defender as a priority.
Prior to joining Defensa y Justicia in 2017, Martnez had his first job as a professional with Newell’s Old Boys.In 2019, After joining Ajax, he earned one KNVB Cup and two Eredivisie championships. Throughout the 2021–22 campaign, he was named Ajax Player of the Year.
Prior to making his senior international debut in March 2019, Martnez competed for Argentina at the under-20 and under-23 levels. He played on teams that captured the Copa América in 2021 and the Finalissima in 2022.
