Manisha Kalyan will be the first Indian player to compete in the UEFA Women’s Champions League
On Sunday, Kalyan’s now-defunct club Gokulam Kerala announced the news. “Manisha, thank you! Manisha has signed a two-year contract with Cypriot Champion Club Apollon Ladies following three years as a Malabarian and two IWL titles with us. “She is going to become the first Indian to participate in this season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League,” the team announced on the Twitter.
On August 18, Apollon will compete in the first round of UEFA Women’s Champions League qualification. If they win, they will play the winners of FC Zurich in Switzerland and Klaksvik Kvinnur on Faroe Island.
The 20-year-old earned India’s first goal in senior football against Brazil in November of last year. Even though India fell 1-6 against the 2007 World Cup runners-up, the youngster made history.
Manisha made her senior team debut in January 2019 against Hong Kong, however, the one more in her career occurred in the 2018 when she was nominated to the Indian U-17 squad that competed in the BRICS Football Cup in South Africa.
During the 2019-20 season, she was instrumental in Gokulam Kerala achieving the Indian Women’s League (IWL). She was awarded the tournament’s developing player.
Manisha has made her way over the stigma and financial challenges to make the national football squad; her desire is to play her nation in the World Cup one day.
