Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has an AFCON U-turn
According to the British magazine News, Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana will miss Cameroon’s opening AFCON 2024 match against Guinea on January 15.
Following talks between United and the Cameroon FA, Onana will play in the Red Devils’ Premier League home game against Tottenham Hotspur on January 14.
He was also scheduled to play Guinea in his country’s first AFCON 2024 match the following day.
However, according to the aforementioned conjecture, Onana may not arrive in Ivory Coast in time to play the opening encounter.
The tweet goes on to suggest that Onana may miss all of Cameroon’s AFCON matches.
Given Manchester United’s next match after Tottenham on January 27. Onana may not miss a single club game if Cameroon is ousted from the continental competition’s group stage.
Onana declared his retirement from international football in 2022 following a disagreement with Cameroon coach Rigobert Song over tactics.
However, due to pressure from Cameroon’s president, the goalie returned to play for his nation in August 2023.
Last summer, he joined the Red Devils from Inter Milan for an estimated €51 million. Since then, Onana has made 29 appearances for the English club across all competitions.
According to many reports, Onana is concerned about losing his position as the club’s first choice between the sticks to Bayindir while the latter is gone.
Rio Ferdinand names Andre Onana as one of Manchester United’s best three summer additions
Manchester United signed many noteworthy players in the summer of 2023. Including Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount, Andre Onana, and Jonny Evans.
Evans joined the club on a free transfer from Leicester City, who was relegated from the Premier League at the end of the previous season.
Evans, an experienced defender, was previously thought to be a squad player. But he has emerged as an unexpectedly key element of Erik ten Hag’s team, having appeared in 16 games across all competitions.
Rio Ferdinand ranked Evans as United’s best summer addition, with Onana and Hojlund coming in second and third place, respectively.
Hojlund, like Onana, has been a constant starter for Manchester United’s first team this season. The 20-year-old, who joined the club from Atalanta, has six goals in 24 appearances in all competitions for his new side.
Mount, on the other hand, has joined United from Premier League rivals Chelsea and is now out injured. He has yet to score a goal for his new employers.
