Manchester United used Fulham captain Aleksandar Mitrovic’s red card for pushing the referee in a 3-1 loss to Manchester United on Sunday to advance to the FA Cup semifinals.
When Mitrovic barged into Chris Kavanagh for awarding United a penalty following a VAR review for Willian’s handball on the line, he received one of three Fulham red cards in a matter of seconds.
Along with Fulham manager Marco Silva on the field, the Brazilian was also demoted. United took advantage, keeping Erik ten Hag’s team on track for a treble of cup competitions with two goals from Bruno Fernandes and Marcel Sabitzer’s first goal for the club.
Silva stated, “Mitro ought to control his emotions a little bit.” Because he didn’t pay any attention to me, I must accept the red card if he wants to. I had to accept it as I left my area.”
The fact that a penalty appeal for a first-half foul on Mitrovic was denied by VAR and Fulham was furious was partly to blame.
Silva added, “It’s a shame the ref wasn’t shown VAR for the first half moments.” The VAR also feels the pressure of being Fulham at Old Trafford, which is difficult.
When Mitrovic put the Cottagers ahead early in the second half, they were on track to reach the last four for the first time in 21 years.
Before the match completely turned on a single incident 18 minutes into the second half, United goalkeeper David de Gea had to make a remarkable save to deny the Serbian a second.
