MALAYSIA OPEN: THE ZHENG/HUANG SHOW ROLLS ON
MALAYSIA OPEN: THE ZHENG/HUANG SHOW ROLLS ON. This year’s PETRONAS Malaysia Open 2022 was Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong’s fifth consecutive victory since reuniting after an absence with various partners. It’s not clear why the two-time world champions started the season with different partners.
When we reunited, we were able to harness our talents from previous partnerships to improve as a team, says Huang.
They’ve been so dominant that they’ve only lost two games in their last three championships. Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue of France were the only couples to pose a threat in Malaysia, but the Chinese were able to overcome them in straight games as well. However, they are wary about taking their position of power for granted.
There is no guarantee that we will win, added Huang. It’s all about preparing thoroughly. “We’ve grown up a lot and now we’re much more secure.”
To understand their recent performances, one must remember that they shockingly lost to fellow Chinese competitors Wang Yi Lyu and Huang Dong Ping in the Tokyo 2020 final. Zheng admitted that their defeat had served as motivation.
Of course, Zheng said, “our Olympic defeat had a significant impact on us.” We were upset by it, but it also strengthened our resolve and taught us to be more stable in our thoughts.
Despite Zheng and Huang’s dominating recent form, which included their 19th BWF World Tour championship as a pair and 26th overall, they guaranteed no respite to their rivals. The urge to eat is still very strong.
We simply want to concentrate on playing exceptionally well each and every time; winning trophies is just a result of that, according to Zheng.
In Numbers…
Zheng/Huang won their fifth consecutive Malaysia Open title in 2022.
Their last three competitions have seen only two defeats.
Together, they have won 26 HSBC BWF World Tour titles, including the most recent one, which brought their total to 19.
Zheng won four straight mixed doubles titles, which is an extremely remarkable accomplishment. Three were with Huang Ya Qiong, the first in 2017 with Chen Qing Chen.
