Local players make NFL debuts
Local players make NFL debuts: Two former high school football players from Coweta County high schools made their first appearances in the National Football League over the past weekend in the preseason.
Jeremiah Gemmel, a former member of the East Coweta Indians, is currently playing for the San Francisco 49ers, and James Skalski, a former standout at Northgate, plays for the Indianapolis Colts.
Both players are considered to be linebackers for the defensive unit.
In the first NFL preseason game for both teams, which took place last Friday, Gemmel and the 49ers faced off against the Green Bay Packers. He entered the game and participated in a total of 20 plays, 17 of which were defensive and three of which were on special teams. During the preceding week leading up to the game, Gemmel had an interception in practice against Brock Purdy, who was the rookie quarterback for the 49ers.
The second preseason game for both Gemmel and the 49ers will take place this coming Saturday night against the Minnesota Vikings.
In the first game of the preseason, which took place on Saturday, Skalski and the Colts were defeated by the Buffalo Bills by a score of 27-24. At the end of the game, he was responsible for two tackles and received a defensive grade of 73.7.
It’s a happy coincidence, but Skalski isn’t the only former Northgate football player currently playing for Indianapolis. Brandon Facyson is also on the roster.
Skalski will have the next opportunity to gather more game experience on Saturday afternoon when the Detroit Lions come to town.
The current maximum number of players that can be listed on an NFL team’s active roster is 85 during the preseason, but that number is reduced to 53 just before the start of the regular season. Additionally, each team has the ability to add sixteen more players to their practice squad.
